School trips to Europe’s protected areas

Trekking in the Giant Mountain National Park (Krkonose), fascinating insights into the high alpine environment of the Hohe Tauern massif, team building in and with nature in the Thayatal National Park! Learning from and living nature. Experiencing and actively discovering nature, in the unique and untouched landscapes of Europe’s protected areas.

National and nature conservation parks as well as biosphere reserves are learning places in often breathtaking natural surroundings! These protected areas offer ideal conditions for school trips that are aimed to provide environmental education and nature experience: encountering and exploring fauna and flora close up, orientating oneself within nature, survival training in the wilderness, revealing the tracks of our ancestors, hiking and the magic of mountain huts, discovering rivers by canoe or setting up camp, these are just a few of the many activities protection areas have to offer.

Qualified experts are there on the spot, ready to put their many years of experience into a range of exciting and diversified programmes prepared in cooperation with the schools.

Model project “Pupils experience nature in Europe’s protected areas”

As part of the model project “Pupils experience nature in Europe’s protected areas”, in the early summer of the school year 2007/2008 EUROPARC is offering ten interested and adventurous school classes the opportunity to take part in a 5-day end-of-school trip to the fascinating nature of Europe’s protected areas. During their stay in the national parks the school children will be able to live and experience nature and gain an insight into the objectives and the philosophy of a protected area. The aim is to sensitise their awareness and spur their enthusiasm for nature and the environment. For this model project we have selected altogether ten trans-border or trans-state national parks. The classes will be accompanied on the spot by national park experts.

Each class will receive a grant of 500 €, funded by the Environment Fund of the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection.

The target group are the final classes of the German grammar schools, secondary schools and general schools as well as vocationally oriented schools at upper secondary level. In cooperation with EUROPARC the protected areas have developed appropriate programmes for the different age groups.
